The World’s Biggest Scotch Drinkers—And It’s Not Who You Think
Scotch whisky shipments climbed to over 1.4 billion bottles in 2024, even as global export value dipped slightly. But who’s actually drinking it, and how? The answer isn’t just about volume. Some countries sip slowly from high shelves; others buy in bulk.
Here’s a look at the top nations fueling Scotch sales.
United Arab Emirates (UAE)

The UAE surged into Scotch’s top ten markets by value in 2024 after reaching £61.3 million in exports during the first half alone. It’s a notable feat for a relatively small country. Much of this demand is driven by Dubai’s luxury bar scene, high-end retail outlets, and a strong expat population with a taste for premium spirits.

While not yet a top-ten market by volume or value, South Korea is gaining ground quickly as a high-value, premium-focused destination for Scotch. It’s positioned within the Asia-Pacific region, which saw £1.57 billion in Scotch exports in 2024.
China

Just 30 million bottles made their way to China, but they came with a $203 million tab. Scotch here still functions as a status currency, usually gifted at high-end dinners or used to impress clients. Collectors and business elites drive the market, especially in urban hubs where labels matter as much as taste.
Poland

Poland drank more Scotch than China or Turkey—48 million bottles—but didn’t appear on the top-ten value list. Price wins over prestige here. Most of the Scotch sold there is inexpensive blended whisky, often stocked in discount grocery stores and widely accessible to casual drinkers.
Turkey

With 47 million bottles imported and $224 million spent, Turkey kept its Scotch habits consistent. The country’s focus is on dependable and familiar options. Most Scotch is consumed in social settings, such as birthdays, casual dinners, or celebratory toasts.
Brazil

Brazil took in 52 million bottles and ranked seventh in volume, but didn’t spend enough to make the top ten by value. Scotch here is something people know, pour, and pass around without ceremony.
Germany

Germany’s Scotch scene didn’t shift much—56 million bottles imported and $212 million spent. It’s a mature market driven by steady interest and retail availability. Regional chains, local events, and online sellers keep the flow going.
Japan

Japan consumed 74 million bottles, fourth in global volume, but spent only $229 million, so it landed in the lower half of the value rankings. Consumers tend to favor blends over aged single malts, and Scotch holds a place in both everyday drinking and izakaya culture.
Spain

Spain has a balanced market, and Scotch shows up at dinner tables and festivals alike. The country bought 59 million bottles and spent $247 million on them. Consumers pick from a broad shelf with daily blends and occasional higher-end pours.
Taiwan

Taiwan didn’t make the top ten in terms of bottle count, but its Scotch bill reached $376 million. High-end single malts and collectible bottlings dominate this market, supported by dedicated fans, whisky bars, and a healthy secondary trading culture.
Singapore

Singapore ranked third globally in Scotch value at just under $391 million, even without top-ten volume status. Still, that’s an 18 percent drop from the year before. The market may be cooling off after a luxury boom, but elite drinkers and boutique bars still drive a focused, high-spend segment.
France

France continues to hold steady as the world’s second-largest market for Scotch whisky, both by volume and by value. According to the Scotch Whisky Association, French consumers purchased over 170 million bottles in 2023, trailing only India in total imports.

India imported more Scotch than any other nation in 2024, totaling 192 million bottles in just one year. That’s nearly 15 percent more than the year before. Though it ranked fifth in spending at $313 million, the rapid growth highlights how Scotch is becoming central to India’s modern drinking habits, especially in urban centers.

When it comes to money, the USA topped the list. The U.S. imported 132 million bottles and spent over $1.2 billion, more than twice what France did. Premium blends and single malts remain staples for American buyers.
