There Is Only One McDonald’s in the World With Muted Blue Arches
McDonald’s restaurants can change their menus, building designs, or interior styles depending on the country, though one thing almost always stays the same: the bright yellow arches. They are so tied to the brand that most people barely even think about them anymore. That is exactly why one location in Arizona catches so many people off guard.
Drivers passing through Sedona usually notice it right away. The giant “M” still stands above the restaurant like every other McDonald’s, except the arches are blue-green instead of yellow. Against Sedona’s red rock landscape, the softer color looks surprisingly natural, almost like the sign was designed to blend into the desert instead of dominate it.
Sedona Didn’t Want Bright Yellow Arches

When McDonald’s opened its Sedona location in 1993 near State Route 89A, the company originally planned to use the same bright yellow arches seen almost everywhere else. City officials pushed back almost immediately.
Sedona had spent years protecting the area’s distinctive red rock cliffs, desert colors, and scenic views. Local planners felt a giant yellow sign would look harsh against the landscape and stand out for all the wrong reasons. Instead of blocking the restaurant completely, they asked McDonald’s to tone down the colors. That decision eventually led to the now-famous blue-green arches.
The softer color was meant to fit more naturally into Sedona’s surroundings. McDonald’s agreed to the change, and the restaurant became one of the company’s most unusual locations. What started as a local design compromise slowly became a tourist stop that people specifically seek out.
The Outside Looks Different, but the Inside Feels Familiar

People expecting a fully themed, desert-style McDonald’s are usually surprised once they walk through the doors. Inside, the restaurant operates much like every other McDonald’s. The menu is the same, the layout is familiar, and customers can still grab Big Macs, fries, and McNuggets as they would anywhere else.
At one point, the location even used matching teal packaging and drink cups to tie into the exterior branding, though the biggest attraction has always been the sign itself. That contrast explains why the location became such a hit online. The arches look unusual enough to pull people over for photos, but the restaurant still feels recognizable once customers step inside.
McDonald’s Rarely Changes Its Branding
Part of what makes the Sedona restaurant so unusual is how tightly McDonald’s controls its branding. The company changes menus and restaurant layouts by country, though the arches themselves almost always remain the same.
There are only a handful of exceptions. Some restaurants in Paris and Bruges use white arches, while a few locations in the United States have experimented with red or black signs. Older McDonald’s restaurants can also still be found with the company’s original single-arch design from earlier decades.
That makes Sedona part of a very small group of locations where the company stepped away from its standard look, something McDonald’s rarely agrees to do
