Tart cherry juice has earned attention in clinical conversations, thanks to its natural content of melatonin and antioxidants. Experts have looked into how this sour fruit extract affects sleep quality, inflammation, muscle recovery, and even blood pressure.
Unlike synthetic supplements, tart cherry juice offers a food-based option that some sleep experts consider useful. Regular intake may even support more restful sleep, particularly in adults who experience frequent interruptions or difficulty falling asleep.

This antioxidant-filled beverage brings two key sleep-supporting compounds to the table: melatonin and tryptophan. Melatonin regulates your sleep-wake cycle, while tryptophan helps your body create serotonin and, in turn, more melatonin. Together, they reinforce the signals your body relies on to settle down at night.
Researchers have tested this in people over 50 and found that consistent use of tart cherry juice raised melatonin levels and strengthened several sleep measures, including time in bed, total sleep, and sleep efficiency. In one study, participants who drank two daily servings of the Montmorency mixture—about 8 ounces each—recorded longer and better rest.

Beyond sleep, this concoction supports muscle recovery by reducing inflammation and oxidative stress. Polyphenols and anthocyanins, two powerful antioxidants found in tart cherries, lower inflammatory markers. Athletes often consume it during training periods or after strenuous activity.
A study revealed that drinking 12 ounces of tart cherry juice twice daily reduced muscle pain and damage in endurance runners. Meanwhile, another experiment measured recovery in elite field hockey players and discovered that tart cherry juice benefited sleep and physical restoration across a five-day period. You can also drink the juice to help reduce post-exercise soreness and speed up return to baseline function.
On the other hand, for people with arthritis or chronic joint pain, the liquid may ease discomfort and stiffness. Research shows changes in pain scores and inflammatory biomarkers after consistent consumption.
Cognitive and Cardiovascular Research Findings

In terms of wider health effects, professionals noted promising results in both memory and cardiovascular function. One trial tracked older adults with mild to moderate dementia who drank 6 ounces of tart cherry juice daily for 12 weeks.
Their performance on memory and verbal fluency tests improved, likely due to anthocyanins, the antioxidants in tart cherries that help protect neural tissue.
Heart health has also been included in the survey. A 2019 clinical trial found that grown-ups who consumed the diluted Montmorency version had lower blood pressure and improved vascular function. These changes are thought to stem from reduced systemic inflammation and the fruit’s polyphenol compounds.
Since tart cherries are naturally rich in potassium, they may also support healthier circulation. Although the body of evidence remains limited, findings so far suggest the drink could play a role in diets that aim to protect cognitive and cardiovascular health as people age.
