An Ice Cream Company Engineered a Spoon That Blocks Your Notification With a Tap
Vibration alerts, banner notifications, unread emails, breaking news, and group chats have become background noise in everyone’s daily lives. This constant interruption has become so normal that a product designed to stop it sounds slightly ridiculous at first. But it now officially exists.
Halo Top has introduced its new “Silent (à la) Mode Spoon,” a gold-colored spoon with a built-in NFC chip that, with a tap, switches smartphones into Do Not Disturb mode. The limited-edition gadget officially launched on May 15, 2026, and costs $4.90.
The Spoon Works Like a Tiny Digital Escape Button
The concept is pretty easy: tap the spoon against the back of a compatible iPhone or Android device, and the phone silences calls, texts, and notifications while you eat ice cream. The spoon uses near-field communication technology, the same tech often used for contactless payments. After a one-time setup, the spoon becomes a shortcut trigger tied to your phone’s Do Not Disturb settings.
On iPhones, setup runs through Apple’s Shortcuts app and takes about nine steps. Android users need an app called NFC Tasks, along with a shorter six-step setup process. This may sound like a lot of effort for dessert, which may be why the product got attention online so quickly.
Halo Top Knows the Product Sounds Absurd
The Silent (à la) Mode Spoon is somewhere between a practical gadget and a comedy bit. It makes fun of phone addiction while also acknowledging how hard it has become to disconnect voluntarily. Brands have spent the last few years selling “small escapes” instead of big luxuries. We’ve seen fancy bath products, sleep gadgets, journaling apps, mocktails, and now a spoon that temporarily cuts contact with the outside world.
Halo Top fully embraced that angle by framing the spoon as part of the ice cream experience. The company described it as a way to create a more intentional break during dessert time.
The Design Is Very Important

Early testers said the spoon actually feels substantial in person. It has a thick gold finish and a large Halo Top logo attached to the end where the NFC chip is.
The company also tied the $4.90 price tag to its 490-calorie “Mix-Ins” pints introduced in 2025. Those flavors include Sweet Cream Cold Brew, Cherry Chocolate Chunk, and P.B. Cookie Dough & Fudge. There is one catch, though. Due to the embedded chip, the spoon cannot go in the dishwasher, so it’s hand-washing only.
Halo Top Is Selling More Than Ice Cream
Halo Top built its reputation around low-calorie, high-protein ice cream made with sugar substitutes like stevia and erythritol. The brand now sells more than 20 dairy flavors along with dairy-free and vegan options in grocery stores nationwide.
