There was a time when cereal boxes doubled as entertainment and mascots with full-on personalities. In the 1980s, breakfast aisles were packed with wild flavors and tie-ins to everything from video games to movies. Here are some cereals from that golden era that we’d happily welcome back.

Dunkin' Donuts Cereal

Dunkin’ Donuts Cereal gave us bite-sized donut rings in chocolate and powdered sugar flavors. It was as if the donuts themselves had turned into cereal. Some of them were even shaped like tiny donuts that represented the brand’s coffee shop roots. The branding nailed it, but it didn’t age well in the health-conscious ‘90s. Still, we wouldn’t mind a comeback tour.

Smurf-Berry Crunch

This cereal was bursting with color. The berry-flavored pieces turned milk blue, which delighted kids who were already enchanted by the animated Smurfs. Even the packaging came straight out of Smurf Village.

C-3PO’s Cereal

A tie-in with Star Wars was always going to land, and C-3PO’s Cereal did just that. This honey-flavored, figure-eight-shaped cereal gave fans a way to keep the saga going over breakfast. The real fun, though, was in the extras: collectible cards, gold foil packaging, and the droid charm.

Mr. T Cereal

Bold like its namesake, Mr. T Cereal made no attempt to blend in. The corn-and-oat blend, shaped like “T,” had a sweet crunch similar to Cap’n Crunch. But it was the powerful branding, complete with confident catchphrases and Saturday cartoon energy, that turned a standard cereal into a morning ritual for young fans of The A-Team.

Ice Cream Cones Cereal

Ice cream isn’t just for dessert. This cereal went all in on the idea that mornings could be sweet and a little silly at the same time. Chocolate chip and vanilla cone-shaped pieces were paired with creamy clusters, and delivered by a mascot named Ice Cream Jones who looked like it’s rolled straight out of a summer parade.

Pac-Man Cereal

When Pac-Man showed up, breakfast became another level of the arcade. Yellow puffs stood in for the chomping hero, while marshmallow ghosts brought just enough chaos to your bowl. The commercials were loud, weird, and wonderful, just like the game itself. Basically, it was joystick joy in cereal form.

Rocky Road Cereal

With chocolate puffs, nut-flavored clusters, and marshmallows, Rocky Road Cereal took the feel of its ice cream namesake and added crunch. The varied textures made it stand out, and the flavor offered dessert-level satisfaction.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Cereal

This cereal combined sweetened corn nets with marshmallows shaped like turtle gear to capture the action of the TMNT universe. Commercials often featured the turtles battling villains while hyping the day’s breakfast. The box came loaded with cutouts and stickers.

Ghostbusters Cereal

Ghostbusters Cereal kept the spirit of the franchise alive with fruity pieces and marshmallow ghosts. Apart from the fruity-flavored cereal pieces, it also came with a glow-in-the-dark box. Kids who loved the show could keep busting ghosts long after the episode ended, at least until the cereal disappeared in the early ’90s.

Donkey Kong Cereal

If you have ever dreamed of eating your way through an arcade game, Donkey Kong Cereal is the way to do it. Barrel-shaped, honey-flavored pieces made it a simple but satisfying option.

Rainbow Brite Cereal

Rainbow Brite Cereal packed fruit-flavored stars in a spectrum of bright colors. It made breakfast feel like a walk through Rainbow Land. The marketing stayed loyal to the show’s upbeat tone.

Gremlins Cereal

Gremlins Cereal took the mischievous energy of the movie and poured it right into your bowl. The cinnamon-flavored pieces shaped like Gremlin heads gave breakfast a surprisingly cozy twist. And with Gizmo peeking out from the box, it was more charming than creepy.

E.T. Cereal

Peanut butter and chocolate aren’t an everyday cereal combo, but they fit perfectly with the magical tone of the cereal. The pieces were shaped like the letters E and T, and the box was practically a mini movie set with collectible games and film stills.

King Vitaman

While other cereals shouted for attention, King Vitaman played it cool. The mild sweetness and crown-shaped oat pieces were a quieter alternative to the sugar-packed cereals surrounding it. The medieval-themed mascot gave it personality, and parents appreciated the less-is-more approach.
